At the Pint of View event in Bengaluru on August 24, 2025, Rohit Chakravarty, a bat project manager at Nature Conservation Foundation and Bat Conservation International, presented on diverse bat species and their behaviors. He showcased images of various bats, including the newly discovered Himalayan long-tailed myotis found in the Western Himalayas. Chakravarty discussed bats’ ecological roles such as pollination of agave plants and mangroves, and unique behaviors like vampire bats sharing food and Rodrigues fruit bats assisting in childbirth. He traced the history of echolocation discovery from Lazaro Spallanzani to Donald Griffin. Chakravarty also addressed threats to bats, including habitat loss from granite mining affecting species like the Kolar leaf-nosed bat, and advised on safe coexistence practices. The event, inspired by the US Lectures on Tap, aims to engage the public informally with scientific topics. Organizers Harsh Snehanshu, Shruti Sah, and Meghna Chaudhary seek to create mindful intellectual engagement in Bengaluru’s tech community. The next Pint of View lecture is scheduled for September 7, 2025, focusing on textiles and history. (Updated 1 Sep 2025, 14:28 IST; source: link)
