Earth is unique for its abundant liquid water, enabling life to evolve from single-celled organisms to complex multicellular forms over billions of years, with human civilization being very recent. While microbial life may be common wherever water exists, intelligent, spacefaring species like humans could be extremely rare. The search for extraterrestrial life focuses on about 60 sun-like stars within 30 light-years, which are practical for study or probes. Detecting planets is challenging due to stars being millions to billions of times brighter than their planets, complicating direct imaging even with advanced telescopes like JWST. A new proposal suggests using a 1×20 meter rectangular telescope mirror that rotates to align with a planet’s orbit, potentially identifying up to 30 Earth-like planets within three years, offering a promising method to find true “sister planets.” (Updated 1 Sep 2025, 14:27 IST; source: link)
