The government has appointed former Reserve Bank of India Governor Urjit Patel as the Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund for a three-year term, effective from the date he assumes charge or until further orders. Patel succeeds K V Subramanian, whose term ended earlier this year. He served as the 24th Governor of the RBI from 2016 to 2018 and was the first RBI governor since 1992 to resign citing personal reasons. Prior to his governorship, Patel was deputy governor responsible for monetary policy and chaired a committee on strengthening monetary policy. He has also been a director at the Bank for International Settlements and a member of the Advisory Board of the Financial Stability Institute. Early in his career, Patel worked with the IMF and has held advisory roles including consultant to the Indian Ministry of Finance. His appointment comes amid growing importance of global economic coordination at multilateral institutions. (Updated 29 Aug 2025, 09:36 IST; source: link)
