Heavy rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh has caused severe flooding and infrastructure damage, breaking a 115-year rainfall record in Jammu with 380 mm in 24 hours. Rivers Tawi and Chenab rose significantly above danger levels, while many rivers in Kathua remain below danger marks. In Himachal, roads and telecom services have been disrupted for three days in Chamba, Lahaul-Spiti, and Kullu due to floods washing away roads and bridges. Thousands of pilgrims and travelers are stranded, and the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage has been suspended. Udhampur recorded 540 mm of rain in 12 hours, breaking records. Key highways including Jammu-Srinagar and Sinthan roads are closed, with Mughal Road operating cautiously. Relief efforts involve the Indian Army, NDRF, SDRF, CRPF, police, and locals, evacuating around 4,000 people. A special train was arranged for stranded tourists from Jammu to Delhi. The Meteorological Department has issued heavy rain warnings for northern India from August 29 to September 4, advising caution in Jammu. Emergency helpline 112 is active for assistance.
