Trump Imposes 50% Tariffs on Indian Exports Over Russian Oil Purchases

The Trump administration has doubled tariffs on Indian imports to 50%, effective August 27, 2025, as a response to India's continued purchase of Russian crude oil, which the US argues finances Russia's war against Ukraine. The additional 25% tariff follows an earlier 25% tariff imposed in July 2025, raising the total duty to 50%. The US Department of Homeland Security issued a formal notice confirming the tariff increase, with limited exemptions for shipments loaded before the deadline. India has condemned the tariffs as unfair and unjustified, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi affirming protection of national interests and support for farmers and small businesses amid the pressure. The tariffs aim to pressure India to reduce Russian oil imports and encourage peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Discussions between Indian and US officials on trade and energy cooperation occurred ahead of the tariff deadline. (Updated 27 Aug 2025, 09:24 IST; source: link)
