The Supreme Court of India has ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate allegations against Vantara, a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre managed by Anant Ambani and supported by Reliance Industries. The probe, chaired by retired Justice Jasti Chelameswar, will examine issues including animal acquisition, compliance with the Wildlife (Protection) Act, CITES obligations, veterinary care standards, allegations of illegal captivity, misuse of credits, and financial irregularities. The court emphasized the inquiry is fact-finding and does not imply doubt on statutory authorities or Vantara. Vantara issued a statement affirming its commitment to transparency, compassion, and full legal compliance, pledging full cooperation with the SIT and reaffirming its mission to rescue and care for animals. The order follows public interest litigations and protests in Maharashtra demanding the return of an elephant named Mahadevi, relocated to Vantara under a Supreme Court directive. Vantara clarified its role as providing care and housing under judicial authority. The investigation aims to address wide-ranging accusations raised by NGOs and wildlife groups regarding animal treatment and legal compliance at the facility in Jamnagar, Gujarat.
