India Alerts Pakistan About Potential Flood In Tawi River Amid IWT Abeyance
Saralnama

India has alerted Pakistan about a potential flood in the Tawi River in Jammu, marking the first major contact between the two countries since their military conflict in May. The Indian High Commission in Islamabad conveyed the alert on August 24, according to Pakistani media reports. This communication comes despite the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) being in abeyance following the Pahalgam terror attack in April, after which India suspended the treaty as part of punitive measures against Pakistan. The IWT, brokered by the World Bank in 1960, governs the sharing of the Indus River and its tributaries between India and Pakistan. Pakistani authorities have issued warnings based on the information provided by India. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority has warned of heavy rains across most parts of the country until August 30, following earlier monsoon spells that caused significant casualties and injuries. Neither India nor Pakistan has officially confirmed the flood alert or the communication channel used, which is typically through the Indus Water Commissioner.
