Former Army Chief General M M Naravane described the recent improvement in India-China relations as fortuitous, highlighting new initiatives at political, diplomatic, and military levels aimed at enhancing bilateral ties. Speaking at a Delhi event, he expressed hope that China would reciprocate India's goodwill. Naravane noted that India and China are advancing discussions on their boundary issue, emphasizing that it is a boundary open to negotiation and compromise. He referenced the 2005 political and guiding principles agreement on the boundary and welcomed the resumption of talks as a positive development. Naravane also cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2024 interview, stressing the urgency of resolving the border dispute to normalize relations. The recent announcements between the two countries include maintaining peace along the border, reopening border trade, increasing investment, and resuming direct flights. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s visit to India earlier this week involved extensive talks with Indian leaders, reflecting efforts to stabilize ties amid broader geopolitical shifts. Naravane recalled the centuries-old civilizations of India and China and described the 1962 war as a historical episode amid otherwise longstanding relations. He retired as Army Chief in April 2022 after nearly four decades of service. (Updated 22 Aug 2025, 16:23 IST; source: link)
