TMC leaders released on bail after multiple cases

2 min read

The Trinamool Congress has received several favourable court verdicts recently, which the party believes will help as the state Assembly elections approach early next year. On Tuesday, senior TMC leader Partha Chatterjee, imprisoned in connection with a school recruitment scam, was released from jail. Earlier, the Supreme Court ordered the Centre to release long-delayed MNREGS funds for West Bengal. These developments come after a series of arrests involving prominent TMC leaders since 2022 in cases related to school jobs, cattle smuggling, and ration distribution. Most accused leaders, including MLAs Manik Bhattacharya and Jibankrishna Saha, have now secured bail. Additionally, the Calcutta High Court last month removed special protection given to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari against FIR registrations. TMC leaders view these verdicts as significant political wins, while the BJP insists corruption allegations remain valid despite bail being granted.

Starting in 2022, more than 25,000 school jobs were cancelled due to a recruitment scam, leading to the arrest of several TMC leaders. Partha Chatterjee, along with MLAs Manik Bhattacharya, Jibankrishna Saha, and youth leader Kuntal Ghosh, were detained. Most have since obtained bail. In a separate cattle smuggling case, senior TMC leader Anubrata Mondol was arrested by the CBI and ED, receiving bail in September. Another leader, Jyotipriya Mallick, was arrested over an alleged ration scam alongside party colleagues Anisur Rehman, Shankar Adhya, and businessman Bakibur Rahman. All are currently out on bail. A senior TMC leader stated that in politics, perception matters, and bail is viewed almost like an acquittal, giving the party an advantage.
