BSP Restarts Muslim Outreach After Three-Year Gap

2 min read

The Bahujan Samaj Party has decided to restart its Muslim outreach after stopping it three years ago. Following the 2022 Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, BSP chief Mayawati had blamed Muslims for the party's poor results when it won only one seat. She repeated similar criticism after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where BSP won no seats in the state. Despite fielding the highest number of Muslim candidates in both elections, none won. Now, ahead of the 2027 Assembly polls, the BSP has revived its Muslim Samaj Bhaichara Sangathan to reconnect with the minority community and combine it with the party's traditional Dalit vote base. Mayawati will hold a meeting with mandal coordinators appointed across 18 divisions to restart this Muslim outreach. Muslims make up 19 percent of Uttar Pradesh's population, making them important for electoral calculations.

BSP Restarts Muslim Outreach After Three-Year Gap

The BSP suspended its Muslim outreach after the 2022 Assembly elections when it won just one seat despite fielding 88 Muslim candidates. Mayawati blamed the community for supporting the Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance instead of BSP. In 2024 Lok Sabha elections, BSP fielded 37 Muslim candidates nationally and 19 in Uttar Pradesh, but none won. Muslim candidates finished third in their constituencies. Mayawati said Muslims failed to understand BSP despite adequate representation and warned the party would reconsider future opportunities. She claimed if BSP received even half the Muslim votes, Brahmins upset with BJP would have supported her party. Now BSP has appointed mandal coordinators across 18 divisions to revive the Muslim Sangathan ahead of 2027 polls.
