Political Fallout and Demands for Investigation

2 min read

A woman doctor's alleged suicide in Phaltan taluka, Satara district, has put the BJP and former MP Ranjitsinh Naik Nimbalkar in a difficult position ahead of local body elections. The 28-year-old doctor from Beed was found dead on October 23, with a note alleging sexual harassment by a police sub-inspector and mental harassment by her landlord's son. Both accused have been arrested. Controversy deepened after a purported letter by the victim claimed two personal assistants of a former MP pressured her to alter medical reports. Nimbalkar, who lost the Madha Lok Sabha seat in 2024, has denied all allegations. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis visited Phaltan and defended Nimbalkar, stating there was no evidence of his involvement. Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, have strongly criticized the incident, calling it institutional murder. The case has sparked demands for a Special Investigation Team probe.

Political Fallout and Demands for Investigation

The incident has become a major political flashpoint with local body polls approaching. Former Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve shared portions of the doctor's purported letter on social media, alleging that Nimbalkar's assistants pressured her over medical reports. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi termed it institutional murder and accused BJP-linked individuals of attempting to pressure the victim into corruption. NCP leader Dhananjay Munde demanded a Special Investigation Team probe, while his cousin, BJP minister Pankaja Munde, visited the doctor's family in Beed. Some BJP leaders, including MLA Suresh Dhas, have called for punishment if involvement is proven. Nimbalkar, who joined BJP in 2019 after leaving Congress, has denied all allegations, stating he has done nothing wrong.
