Senior Leaders Voice Concerns Over Government Performance

2 min read

The National Conference government in Jammu and Kashmir, led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, is facing internal criticism as it crosses the one-year mark since taking office on October 16, 2024. Senior party leader and Anantnag-Rajouri MP Mian Altaf Ahmad publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the government's performance at a Srinagar event last Sunday. He highlighted failures in fulfilling political promises and governance issues, particularly regarding unemployment and job recruitment. Altaf's remarks echo earlier criticism from Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, who has been vocal about the government's alleged shortcomings on issues like Article 370 restoration and job creation. Omar Abdullah quickly responded, calling Altaf a "fatherly figure" and requesting direct communication rather than media statements. The Chief Minister dismissed comparisons between Altaf and Ruhullah, calling them vastly different. The internal discord reflects broader concerns among veteran party members about being marginalized in favor of younger leadership.

Senior Leaders Voice Concerns Over Government Performance

Mian Altaf Ahmad, a 68-year-old spiritual leader with significant influence over Gujjar and Pahari tribals across Jammu and Kashmir, criticized the Omar Abdullah government at a media event in Srinagar. He stated there has been no progress on political issues and governance needs improvement. Altaf specifically targeted the Chief Minister's team of ministers, suggesting Omar must ensure his team is honest and competent to send proper signals to the administration. On unemployment, he emphasized the government should have referred all job vacancies to recruitment agencies in its first week. His criticism is particularly significant as he is among the NC's stalwarts, and his discontent may encourage similar voices from the party's old guard.

Omar Abdullah's Response and Ongoing Tensions

Following Altaf's statement, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah immediately called him and requested direct communication instead of speaking through media. Omar defended himself by saying Altaf clarified some reported statements were inaccurate. However, regarding Ruhullah Mehdi's ongoing criticism, Omar dismissed him entirely, saying there is a "difference of sky and earth" between the two MPs. Ruhullah responded by calling it unfortunate that Omar was making it a personal fight. The 48-year-old Shia cleric continues questioning the government's delivery on promises like Article 370 restoration, statehood, and one lakh jobs. He has even refused to campaign for the NC candidate in the November 11 Budgam bypolls, stating his loyalty lies with his conscience and principles.
