The University of Chicago will reduce and pause Ph.D. admissions in many humanities programs for the 2026–27 academic year. Seven departments like Art History and Philosophy will admit fewer students. Other departments, including South Asian languages and music studies, will stop new admissions temporarily. The Crown Family School of Social Work and Harris School of Public Policy will also pause some Ph.D. admissions. This decision follows a faculty review and aims to maintain quality training amid financial challenges. Current students will not be affected. The university plans to assess programs during the year to improve future Ph.D. education. (Updated 28 Aug 2025, 09:41 IST; source: link)
