Nearly one-third of Indian school students took private coaching in 2025, says a government survey. This trend is more common in urban areas, where 30.7% of students attend coaching, compared to 25.5% in rural areas. The survey covered over 52,000 households and nearly 58,000 students across India. Government schools enroll 55.9% of students nationally, with higher rural enrolment (66%) than urban (30.1%). Private schools account for about 32% of enrolments. Urban families spend more on coaching, averaging ₹3,988 per student yearly, while rural families spend ₹1,793. Spending rises with education level; urban higher secondary students spend nearly ₹9,950 on coaching, rural students ₹4,548. Most students (95%) rely on family for education expenses. The survey highlights growing reliance on private coaching, especially in cities, and the financial burden it creates for families. (Updated 27 Aug 2025, 12:12 IST; source: link)
