The IIT Council, the apex body coordinating 23 Indian Institutes of Technology, convened its 56th meeting on Monday after a gap of over two years to discuss key issues including credit sharing among IITs under the National Credit Framework, accreditation reforms, and reducing coaching dependency in JEE Advanced. The agenda also covered enhancing scholarships and pocket allowances for SC and ST students, mental health and wellness initiatives, curriculum updates in response to artificial intelligence, and reforms in PhD education. The council considered recommendations from the Radhakrishnan Committee to bring IITs under a national accreditation framework aligned with the National Education Policy 2020. Discussions included promoting research commercialization, bridging discovery and impact, and overcoming language barriers through regional languages. The meeting aligns with the government’s vision of making IITs inclusive, research-driven, and central to India’s strategic goals for a self-reliant and prosperous nation by 2047. The council last met in April 2023 and is chaired by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who outlined a 25-year roadmap for IITs to lead in scientific and technological progress.
