The IIT Council, the apex body coordinating 23 Indian Institutes of Technology, met after two years to discuss key issues including credit sharing under the National Credit Framework, making JEE Advanced less coaching-dependent, and accreditation of IITs. The council also focused on enhancing scholarships and pocket allowances for SC and ST students, mental health and wellness initiatives, and overcoming language barriers through regional languages. Discussions included reforms in curriculum, pedagogy, and assessments in response to Artificial Intelligence, as well as accountability in PhD education and research commercialization. The council considered the Radhakrishnan Committee's recommendation to bring IITs under the national accreditation framework proposed in the National Education Policy 2020. Other agenda items were IIT education’s role in supporting Atmanirbhar and Samriddha Bharat, establishing an outcome-oriented peer review process, and addressing reservation policy implementation and potential sports quota in admissions. The meeting marked a significant step in aligning IITs with contemporary educational and societal needs. (Updated 25 Aug 2025, 15:22 IST; source: link)
