The Kerala government plans to formally object to the University Grants Commission’s draft Learning Outcomes-based Curriculum Framework, alleging it imposes Hindutva ideology on students. The Kerala State Higher Education Council has been tasked with framing the state’s response. The draft curriculum, covering nine undergraduate subjects including Political Science, has faced criticism for including ideologically charged content such as V.D. Savarkar’s works and ancient texts like the Upanishads and Arthashastra in sustainability studies. Kerala’s Higher Education Minister R. Bindu described the draft as regressive, unscientific, and aligned with Sangh Parivar interests, noting it contradicts stated goals of multidisciplinary and holistic education. She highlighted concerns over the rejection of academic flexibility, neglect of language studies, and the introduction of ideologically biased material, warning it could undermine academic freedom and quality, potentially leading to intolerance and unrest in academic institutions. The government’s policy think-tank will review the draft and establish a committee for comprehensive evaluation on August 26, 2025. (Updated 25 Aug 2025, 12:29 IST; source: link)
