2 min read

Panjab University has decided to withdraw the controversial 'no-protest affidavit' requirement that was mandatory for first-year students enrolling for the 2025-2026 session. The decision came after a seven-day-long agitation by students who called off their protest following the university's announcement on Tuesday evening. Campus Students' Council general secretary Abhishek Dagar also ended his seven-day hunger strike after the development. Students had strongly opposed the affidavit, claiming it was undemocratic and would prevent them from organizing or participating in any protests or demonstrations on campus. The university stated that the matter was resolved in the larger interest of students and to ensure smooth continuation of academic activities. Protesting students also agreed to withdraw their legal case related to the issue.

The university administration announced withdrawal of the affidavit requirement for students enrolled in first-year courses or programs. In an official statement, authorities emphasized that this step was taken to maintain a constructive academic environment on campus while ensuring uninterrupted academic activities. The university expressed its commitment to encouraging open dialogue and respecting diverse views and opinions among students. Students had begun an indefinite strike last week, describing the affidavit as undemocratic because it required them to declare they would not participate in protests or demonstrations. The administration confirmed that agitating students agreed to withdraw their legal case on this matter following the decision.
