2 min read

Several prominent Indian universities have secured positions among Asia's top 100 institutions in the latest QS World University Rankings released in early November 2025. Five IITs—Delhi, Madras, Bombay, Kanpur, and Kharagpur—alongside the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, and Delhi University were included in this prestigious list. A total of seven Indian institutions ranked in the top 100, with 20 in the top 200 and 66 in the top 500 across Asia. IIT-Delhi, positioned at 59, maintained its status as India's highest-ranked institution for the fifth consecutive year. The rankings, based on 11 tailored indicators, reflect India's growing research capacity and faculty excellence. While 36 Indian institutes improved their positions from the previous year, 105 dropped in rank. The expansion in rankings coverage contributed to increased volatility this year.

India Leads Asia in Research and Faculty Qualifications

India demonstrated exceptional strength in research and faculty quality across multiple indicators. The country dominated the 'Papers per Faculty' category, placing five universities in Asia's top 10 and 28 in the top 50—more than double China's figures. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology ranked first for papers per faculty, followed by Bharathiar University and the Indian Institute of Science. In the 'Staff with PhD' category, India placed 45 universities in the top 100, with South Korea trailing at 15. Nine Indian institutions, including IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Kharagpur, shared joint fourth position regionally. These results highlight India's substantial investment in faculty development and research-led teaching since the National Education Policy launched five years ago.
