The Ministry of Education plans to introduce Artificial Intelligence as part of the school curriculum for students starting from Class 3 onwards beginning the 2026-27 academic year. A framework for integrating AI across different grades is currently under development by the Central Board of Secondary Education. School Education Secretary Sanjay Kumar emphasized the need to prepare both students and teachers for the digital economy within the next two to three years. The main challenge involves training over one crore teachers nationwide to deliver AI-related education effectively. Currently, more than 18,000 CBSE schools already offer AI as a skill subject from Class 6 through a 15-hour module, while Classes 9 to 12 have it available as an optional subject. A pilot project is underway where teachers use AI tools for preparing lesson plans.

AI Education and Future Job Landscape

These announcements came during the release of a NITI Aayog report examining AI's impact on employment. The report forecasts that approximately two million traditional jobs may be displaced due to AI adoption, but around eight million new roles could emerge if the appropriate ecosystem is established. The report recommends strong collaboration between the proposed India AI Talent Mission and the ongoing India AI Mission. It also calls for partnerships connecting academia, government, and industry to build necessary compute infrastructure and ensure data availability. According to the report, India's success in the AI economy depends on coordinated leadership across multiple sectors to protect the workforce while positioning the country as a global AI leader.
