Major Shift for UP Board: Students to Take 10 Subjects with Three Languages

21-06-24: Uttar Pradesh State Board of High School and Intermediate Education (UP Board) has announced significant changes for classes 9 and 10 starting from academic session 2025-26. The changes are aimed at enhancing the overall educational experience for students.

Increased Subjects and Languages

One of key changes is the increase in number of subjects for examination in class 9 from six to ten. This will provide students with a broader range of options to explore and develop their skills. Additionally, the three-language formula will be implemented, making it mandatory for every student to study at least three languages.

Mandatory Languages

Under this formula, Hindi will be mandatory for all students. Students will also choose two languages from options including Sanskrit, Gujarati, Urdu, Punjabi, Bengali, Marathi, Assamese, Oriya, Kannada, Kashmiri, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Nepali, Pali, Arabic, Persian, and English.

Compulsory Subjects

Mathematics, Science, and Social Science will remain compulsory subjects. Students will also need to opt for one subject among Home Science, Anthropology, Commerce, NCC, Computer, Agriculture, or Environmental Science.

Art Education and Physical Education

In  domain of Art Education, students can select from painting, music, singing, or music playing. For Physical and Health Education, choices include Moral, Yoga, Sports and Physical Education, and socially useful productive work.

Vocational Education

Vocational Education will offer 31 subjects for students to choose from, with a written examination carrying 30 marks and internal assessment contributing 70 marks in Physical, Art, and Vocational Education. Other subjects will have a written exam of 80 marks and internal assessment of 20 marks.

Changes in Marksheet and Grading System

The total marks for the high school marksheet will now be 1,000, up from the previous 600 marks. Each subject will carry 100 marks, with 80 for final exam and 20 for internal assessment. A new grading system will be introduced along with changes in question paper format to align with revamped curriculum.

Implementation Timeline

The implementation of three-language formula will be executed in class 9 commencing from the session of 2025-26 and in class 10 from subsequent academic year.

Stakeholder Feedback

UP Board has sought suggestions from all stakeholders by June 29 to implement these changes in a phased manner for over 50 lakh students of class 9 and 10 studying in more than 27,000 schools associated with board.
