The cancellation comes amid ongoing controversies surrounding another major national entrance test, the NEET-UG. The NEET-UG exam has been embroiled in allegations of paper leaks and the awarding of grace marks to an unusually high number of candidates, leading to a Supreme Court-ordered retest for over 1,500 students.
The UGC-NET exam, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), is crucial for determining eligibility for assistant professor positions and junior research fellowships in universities and colleges. The exam was held on June 18 in pen-and-paper format across 317 cities, with 81% of the registered candidates appearing for the test.
The Ministry of Education announced the cancellation of the exam, stating that the inputs from the I4C indicated that the integrity of the examination may have been compromised. The investigation into the matter has been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The cancellation of the UGC-NET exam has sparked a major controversy, with opposition leaders criticizing the government’s handling of the situation. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge accused the Modi government of playing with the future of the youth, saying that the cancellation was a victory of the spirit of millions of students and a defeat of the arrogance of the Modi government.
The decision to cancel the UGC-NET exam comes amidst ongoing debates about the competence and integrity of the NTA, which has been conducting national entrance tests for various courses. The cancellation of the UGC-NET exam highlights the need for a comprehensive probe to ensure accountability and restore public trust in the examination system.
