Melli, Namchi | October 1, 2025 – Management and Information Technology (MIT) University in Sikkim has received official recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC), becoming the state’s newest private university.
The recognition follows the passage of Sikkim Legislative Assembly Act No. 11 of 2024, with Governor Om Prakash Mathur granting operational approval. A UGC notification dated September 30, 2025, confirmed the institution’s inclusion under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956, effective June 26, 2025.
The Melli campus began operations on July 10, 2025, and now offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs with a strong focus on industry-integrated education for students across the Northeast.
As per UGC rules, the university must secure NAAC accreditation and cannot launch distance or online programs without prior approval. Affiliated colleges are not permitted under current norms.
MIT University Sikkim has also signed placement partnerships with corporate organizations and is planning academic collaborations with leading UK universities, including the University of Liverpool and the University of Oxford.
MIT University Sikkim Degrees awarded by the university will be valid for government jobs, higher education, and professional careers. Admissions are currently open through the official website mituniversitysikkim.com, where students can find details about courses, eligibility, and fee structures.
