Melli, Namchi | October 1, 2025 — The Management and Information Technology (MIT) University, Sikkim has received official recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC), marking a key milestone for higher education in the Northeast.

The recognition follows the passage of Act of 2024 by the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, granting the institute full university status. Governor Om Prakash Mathur approved operations at the Melli campus, with a focus on industry-integrated learning.

As per a UGC notification dated September  the university—established under the MIT University Sikkim Act, 2024—came into effect from June 26, 2025, and began operations on July 10, 2025. It has now been included in the list of universities under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956.

The university is offering undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD programs. UGC conditions mandate strict compliance with academic regulations, NAAC accreditation.

MIT University Sikkim has already tied up with corporate partners for placements and is exploring academic collaborations with leading UK universities including Liverpool and Oxford to provide international exposure.

All degrees awarded by the university will be valid for government jobs, higher studies, and professional careers. Students can apply online through the official website mituniversitysikkim.com, which provides complete details on courses, eligibility, and fee structure.
