On [27 [Aug 2025, Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL). He plans to play in other global cricket leagues, including The Hundred in England. Ashwin, aged 38, ended his IPL career as the fifth-highest wicket-taker with 187 wickets in 221 matches and had a ₹9.75 crore contract with Chennai Super Kings in 2025. Former cricketer Aakash Chopra said other Indian players can play in foreign leagues only if they retire from both international cricket and the IPL, which means losing IPL earnings. Ashwin is one of the few players taking this path. Earlier, Dinesh Karthik retired from Indian cricket to play in the SA20 league. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) does not allow active Indian players to join overseas leagues to protect the IPL's uniqueness.
