In the third ODI at Mackay’s Great Barrier Reef Arena on August 24, 2025, 22-year-old Australian spinner Cooper Connolly took a record-breaking five-wicket haul, finishing with 5 for 22 to lead Australia to a 276-run victory over South Africa. Connolly’s performance surpassed Brad Hogg’s 2005 record for the best bowling figures by an Australian spinner in men’s ODIs and made him the youngest Australian to take an ODI five-for, breaking Craig McDermott’s 1987 record. His figures are also the best by an Australian spinner against South Africa, surpassing Shane Warne’s 1999 record. Australia posted 431/2, their second-highest ODI total, with centuries from Travis Head (142), Mitchell Marsh (100), and Cameron Green (118), whose 47-ball century was the second-fastest by an Australian in ODIs. South Africa was bowled out for 155 in 24.5 overs, suffering their heaviest ODI defeat by runs. Connolly’s wickets included Dewald Brevis, Tony de Zorzi, Wiaan Mulder, Corbin Bosch, and Keshav Maharaj. This win was Australia’s second-largest ODI victory by runs, behind their 309-run win over the Netherlands in 2023. (Updated 25 Aug 2025, 11:54 IST; source: link)
