Lord Swraj Paul, a prominent NRI industrialist and philanthropist, died in London on August 21, 2025, at the age of 94 after a recent illness and hospitalization. Born in Jalandhar, Punjab, in 1931, he moved to the UK in the 1960s seeking treatment for his daughter Ambika, who died of cancer at age four. He founded the Caparo Group, a multinational steel and engineering company with operations in the UK, India, and beyond. Lord Paul was made a life peer in the UK House of Lords in 1996, where he contributed to committees on trade, education, and entrepreneurship. He was known for his philanthropic work, including establishing the Ambika Paul Foundation in memory of his daughter and supporting causes such as the London Zoo’s children’s section. Despite personal losses, including the deaths of his son Angad in 2015 and wife Aruna in 2022, he remained active in philanthropy and efforts to strengthen Indo-British relations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences, highlighting Lord Paul’s contributions to industry, public service, and fostering closer ties between India and the UK.
