Cricket Officials Defend Pitch Quality Despite Brief Match

2 min read

The International Cricket Council has awarded a 'very good' rating to the Perth Stadium pitch used in the first Ashes Test, even though the match concluded in just two days. Match referee Ranjan Madugalle provided this assessment, which is the highest possible under the ICC's four-tier grading system. Such a rating indicates the pitch offered characteristic carry, minimal seam movement, and regular bounce. Australia secured an eight-wicket victory, with only 468 runs scored for 30 wickets before the run-chase. Mitchell Starc claimed a 10-wicket haul (7/58 and 3/55) and received the Player of the Match award. The match lasted merely 141.1 overs, disappointing fans who had purchased tickets for days three and four. The second Test, a pink-ball encounter, is set to begin in Brisbane on December 4, giving both sides time to prepare.

Cricket Australia's Chief of Cricket, James Allsop, acknowledged the contest featured riveting action from both teams, particularly brilliant pace bowling. He stated the 'very good' rating justified their belief that the Perth Stadium pitch provided a fair balance between bat and ball. Allsop recognized the disappointment of fans holding tickets for days three and four, but emphasized the incredible moments that captivated large viewing audiences. He noted these thrilling passages of play would inspire more children to take up cricket. A total of 19 wickets fell on the opening day, followed by England's collapse despite gaining a 40-run first innings lead. Travis Head's quickfire century helped Australia cruise to victory.
