Steyn’s Perspective on Fitness and Form in IPL Decisions

2 min read

Former South African pace legend Dale Steyn has disclosed that he repeatedly requested the Sunrisers Hyderabad management to acquire Mohammed Shami while serving as the franchise's bowling coach. Steyn worked with SRH from 2021 to 2024, a period he described as coinciding with Shami's best form, including his Purple Cap triumph in IPL 2023. Ironically, SRH signed Shami for INR 10 crore at the mega auction only after Steyn's departure. However, the veteran bowler's tenure with the franchise has been underwhelming, managing just six wickets in nine matches during the 2025 season due to fitness struggles and inconsistency. Speculation now surrounds Shami's future, with reports suggesting a possible trade to Lucknow Super Giants or outright release. Despite the disappointing stint, the 35-year-old has recently shown strong form, claiming 15 wickets in three Ranji Trophy fixtures.

Steyn's Perspective on Fitness and Form in IPL Decisions

Speaking on Star Sports, Steyn expressed disappointment at the prospect of SRH releasing Shami but acknowledged that fitness concerns significantly influence franchise decisions. He emphasized that a fully fit Shami would be an automatic selection for any IPL team. The legendary pacer noted that franchises prioritize bowlers who are match-ready and in good rhythm. He explained that while Shami's quality is undeniable, recent struggles and time away from the game might lead teams to prefer players currently performing well. Steyn reiterated his past efforts, saying he was "begging" for Shami's inclusion three years ago, underscoring his belief in the Indian pacer's exceptional abilities when operating at full capacity.
