BPL brings back player auction after 12 years-latest details and guidance

2 min read

The Bangladesh Premier League is reintroducing the player auction format after a 12-year absence. The auction system was previously used only in the first two editions held in 2012 and 2013, after which the league adopted a draft system for nine consecutive seasons. The upcoming auction is scheduled for November 23 at a city hotel, where five franchises will compete to assemble their squads for the tournament's 12th edition. The participating teams are Dhaka Capitals, Chattogram Royals, Rajshahi Warriors, Rangpur Riders, and Sylhet Titans. This marks the start of a new franchise ownership cycle with a restructured and transparent bidding process. The Bangladesh Cricket Board and BPL Governing Council aim to align the league with international T20 franchise standards through this reform. Players will be categorized with structured base prices and bidding increments for both local and overseas cricketers.

Auction Structure and Financial Framework

Local players are divided into six categories, while overseas players fall under five categories. The top 'A' category local players have a base price of BDT 50 lakh with BDT 5 lakh bidding increments. Foreign players in the highest category start at USD 35,000 with USD 5,000 increments. Each franchise may directly sign up to two Bangladesh players from A and B categories and one or two foreign players before the auction, subject to council approval. Teams have a budget cap of BDT 4.5 crore for local players and USD 350,000 for foreign players. Franchises must purchase at least 11 local players through auction, with a maximum of 15 allowed. Payment will be made in three instalments: 25 percent upon signing, 55 percent before the final league match, and 20 percent within
