Former Australia and Chennai Super Kings opener Matthew Hayden has suggested that Mumbai Indians should think about releasing fast bowlers Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar before the mini auction scheduled for next month. He believes this approach could allow the five-time champions to buy back the bowlers at reduced prices while freeing up money to strengthen their squad depth with better backup options. Mumbai Indians reached the playoffs last season but lost to Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2. Boult delivered an impressive performance with 22 wickets in 16 matches at an average of 23.50, proving particularly effective during powerplay overs. In contrast, Chahar struggled, managing only 11 wickets from 14 games at an average of 34.18 and an economy rate of 9.17. The retention deadline is November 15, while the auction will reportedly take place on December 15 or 16.

Strategy to Improve Squad Balance and Bench Strength
Speaking on JioStar's IPL 2026 Retention Preview, Hayden explained that despite having a balanced playing eleven, Mumbai faces difficult choices. He pointed out that Boult, despite taking 22 wickets last season and dominating the powerplay, carries a price tag of 12.5 crore. Releasing him could allow management to re-sign him at a lower cost. This would help Mumbai redirect funds to address their weak backup options. Hayden emphasized that while the franchise boasts excellent young talent and has won five championships, improving bench strength with quality reserves is essential for sustained success in the tournament.
