Bavuma Backs Spin Resources to Take 20 Wickets in India

2 min read

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma expressed confidence in his team's bowling attack ahead of the two-match Test series against India, which begins on Friday, November 14, at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. He emphasized that bowling remains South Africa's core strength and backed his spin trio to deliver in Indian conditions. The Proteas are coming off a successful tour of Pakistan where their spinners claimed 33 wickets in a drawn series. Bavuma acknowledged the challenge of playing in India, where South Africa last won a Test series in 1999-2000 under Hansie Cronje. As the newly crowned World Test Champions after defeating Australia, expectations are high for the visitors. Despite the absence of senior Indian players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin, Bavuma believes India's young talent can step up and provide a tough challenge.

Bavuma highlighted that bowling has consistently been South Africa's strongest department. He expressed confidence in the team's ability to secure 20 wickets in Test matches, particularly with enhanced spin resources. The captain named Tristan Stubbs as an additional off-spin option if needed. The spin trio of Keshav Maharaj, Simon Harmer and Senuran Muthusamy will be crucial after their impressive performance in Pakistan last month, where they combined for 33 wickets in the drawn series. Bavuma stated that if conditions favour spin bowling, South Africa now possess the necessary resources. He also acknowledged the massive opportunity to break the drought of winning a Test series in India, while recognizing the expectations that come with being World Test Champions.
