Former India opener Aakash Chopra has criticized the team management's decision to drop Sanju Samson and include Jitesh Sharma as wicketkeeper-batter in the third T20I against Australia at Hobart on November 2. Chopra expressed confusion over the selection logic, noting that Jitesh was expected to play during the Asia Cup in September after Shubman Gill took the opener's slot. However, Samson played throughout that tournament instead. Despite Samson's contributions in the Asia Cup final, he was dropped after batting at number three in one innings. Jitesh scored an unbeaten 22 off 13 balls, helping India chase down a 187-run target. Chopra also highlighted Shubman Gill's recent struggles, scoring just 5 and 15 in the last two matches after an unbeaten 37 in the series opener. He urged Gill to find form quickly with Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal waiting for opportunities.
Selection Logic and Gill's Form Under Scanner
Chopra questioned the unpredictable selection choices, stating fans should not search for logic in team decisions. Samson played throughout the Asia Cup despite initial expectations favoring Jitesh, even contributing important runs in the final. After being moved to number three, Samson was suddenly dropped. Chopra acknowledged that Samson's fans have valid reasons to be upset. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill faces mounting pressure after scoring only 5 and 15 in recent matches. Though Gill has been in excellent form throughout 2025, he urgently needs runs with strong contenders like Sanju Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal competing for top-order positions. Chopra emphasized Gill must deliver in the remaining two matches to secure his spot.
