The Finance Ministry has suggested the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) to conduct clerk recruitment exam for Public Sector Banks (PSBs) in 13 regional languages ​​along with English and Hindi. An official statement said that the decision is based on the recommendation of a committee. This committee was constituted by the ministry to look into the matter of conducting examinations for clerical cadre in PSBs in regional languages.

The statement further said that the process of conducting the examination initiated by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) was put on hold till the recommendations of the committee were made available. At present, the 11th edition of IBPS Clerk exam has been put on hold. The ministry has said that this decision will be applicable to the recruitment process in 12 public sector banks. At the same time, it will also be applicable to SBI vacancies in future.

It is worth noting that this decision of conducting clerical examination in regional languages ​​will also be applicable to SBI vacancies in future. According to the official statement, SBI’s ongoing recruitment process for the vacancies already advertised and for which the preliminary examination was conducted will be completed as per the advertisement.

The Finance Ministry had in July directed IBPS to conduct the examination for clerical cadre in PSBs. There has been a demand, especially from the southern states, to include regional languages ​​for conducting Bank Clerical Cadre Exams. There are 22 languages ​​recognized by the Constitution of India.

RRB Office Assistant exam is conducted in 13 regional languages

Significantly, the Finance Minister had assured Parliament in July 2019 that the recruitment examination for employment in Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) would be conducted in regional languages ​​apart from English and Hindi. However, with a view to provide equal opportunities to the local youth to avail employment opportunities, the Government had decided in 2019 to recruit Office Assistant and Officer Scale I in RRBs, including Konkani and Kannada in addition to Hindi and English. The exam will be conducted in 13 regional languages. Since then examinations are being conducted for these recruitments in regional languages ​​as well.
