Filmmaker Karan Johar, who is a single parent to twins Yash and Roohi, recently opened up about the loneliness he experiences without a romantic partner. Speaking on a podcast with Sania Mirza, he shared how he felt isolated during personal achievements rather than difficult times. He recalled receiving the news of his National Award and having no one special to celebrate with that evening. When he attended the ceremony in Delhi, he was asked about his plus one but had nobody to accompany him, as his mother was unwell and his children were too young. Johar admitted that loneliness strikes hardest during happy moments and festive occasions like New Year's. He mentioned avoiding his dining table to reduce the feeling of eating alone. This year, he won the National Award for Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani in the Best Popular Film category, marking his directorial return after nine years.
Celebrating Success Without a Partner
Johar explained that loneliness hits hardest during moments of success rather than struggles. After receiving the call about his National Award, he felt unsure about whom to celebrate with that night. He needed someone to hold his hand and share his happiness. At the awards ceremony, when asked about his plus one, he had no partner to bring along. His mother could not travel due to health issues, and his children were too young to attend. He confessed that he often avoids his dining table and eats in his room to dilute the loneliness. During occasions like New Year's, when couples celebrate together, he feels especially isolated and prefers the company of single friends.
