Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna's supernatural thriller Thamma has crossed the ₹125 crore mark worldwide but has sparked debate online. The film, released on October 21, 2025, features three bold item songs that have divided audiences. Director Aditya Sarpotdar, who previously made the successful Munjya, defended his creative choices in a recent interview. He explained that the songs serve a clear narrative purpose and fit the extravagant vampire world of the story. The film is part of producer Dinesh Vijan's expanding horror-comedy universe from Maddock Films. It stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Paresh Rawal alongside the leads. The story follows journalist Alok who encounters Tadaka, a mysterious woman from an ancient clan of Betals, mythological vampire-like beings. Their unusual meeting leads to a saga involving love, transformation, and a battle against the powerful Betal leader Yakshashan. Next in the franchise is Shakti Shalini starring Aneet Padda.

Director Defends Songs and Story Integration

Aditya Sarpotdar responded to criticism by clarifying that the three item songs are marketing assets that also advance the story. He told SCREEN that the songs appear because the narrative unfolds through them, rejecting the label of an item number film. The director noted that audiences embraced similar tracks like Taras in Munjya and Aaj Ki Raat without complaints. He believes people are reacting differently now perhaps because such songs appear more frequently. Sarpotdar emphasized that the vampire world of Thamma naturally demanded more extravagance and spectacle. He acknowledged that people judge before watching but expressed satisfaction that audiences still came to theatres to experience the film despite initial reservations.
