2 min read

Author Chetan Bhagat recently revealed that the film adaptation of his novel 2 States initially had different actors in mind before Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt were finalized. In a conversation with Pinkvilla, Bhagat shared that Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra were among the first choices considered for the lead roles. The project also had director Vishal Bharadwaj attached at one point, and actors like Saif Ali Khan were discussed. When the casting changed to feature Arjun and Alia, both relatively new to Bollywood at the time, Bhagat admitted he had doubts. However, he later appreciated how the younger actors brought freshness to the story of a Punjabi boy and a Tamilian girl falling in love during their MBA days at IIM Ahmedabad. The 2014 film became a milestone for both stars, showcasing their versatility and onscreen chemistry.

Initial Plans and Final Casting Choices

Chetan Bhagat disclosed that the film had gone through multiple casting considerations before settling on its final leads. Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, and Saif Ali Khan were among the names discussed for the project. Director Vishal Bharadwaj was also attached at one stage. When the team decided on Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, who each had only one film to their credit at the time, Bhagat was initially uncertain. Alia had just debuted with Student Of The Year, while Arjun was also relatively new. Despite his initial reservations, Bhagat later felt the younger casting made the film feel fresh and authentic. The youthful energy of the actors suited the story of college romance and cultural differences perfectly, making it a successful adaptation.
