Chameleon Party: Satirical Response to Political DefectionsSaralnama

In 1980, cartoonist Mathura Prasad and journalist Kanhaiya Sharan formed the Chameleon Party in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. It was a satirical response to frequent political defections after the 1977 elections. The party fielded candidates for Lok Sabha and Bihar Assembly polls. Though the Election Commission didn't approve the party name, candidates ran as independents. During campaigning, Prasad created and pasted caricatures mocking politicians across the city. Despite authorities removing them, he would put up new ones daily, drawing crowds eager to see the latest satire. To join this unique political movement, one could create and share political cartoons highlighting current issues. (Updated 24 Oct 2025, 10:18 IST; source: link)
