20,000 weavers in Bhagalpur, known as Silk City, face health issues due to loud looms. Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Bhagalpur is developing a soundless loom to address this problem. Dr. Gaurav Kumar, Assistant Professor at IIIT, has designed an actuator for existing looms to reduce noise. The team studied weavers' work methods in Champanagar and Jagdishpur areas. Current powerlooms produce high noise, affecting workers and nearby residents. The new technology aims to eliminate noise during the 'picking' process. IIIT will soon start testing the soundless loom, focusing on improving both weavers' health and fabric quality. The project also aims to keep the machine affordable for small-scale traders.
