1962 Bihar Election: Rivals Show Respect Despite CompetitionSaralnama

In 1962, the Hajipur assembly election in Bihar saw a unique display of political civility. Congress candidate Deep Narayan Singh and Communist Party's Kishori Prasanna Singh competed fiercely during the day but showed remarkable camaraderie in the evenings. Their campaign offices were located opposite each other at Gandhi Ashram. Deep Babu would send food supplies to Kishori's office if needed. Kishori Babu would share half his milk with Deep Babu each morning. This mutual respect and kindness between rivals was common then, but is rarely seen in today's politics. Deep Babu won the 1962 Hajipur election, while Kishori Prasanna Singh later won from the same seat in 1967. (Updated 23 Oct 2025, 02:09 IST; source: link)
