Madras HC Seeks Kidney Transplant Licence Cancellation Order in Illegal Racket Case
Saralnama

The Madras High Court on August 25, 2025, directed the Tamil Nadu Health and Family Welfare Department to produce the official order cancelling the renal transplantation licence of Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College and Hospital in Perambalur. The licence was reportedly cancelled following complaints of an illegal kidney sale racket. Justice N. Anand Venkatesh asked the Additional Advocate General to submit the cancellation order by August 28, as the hospital had challenged only a government press release dated August 10, which stated the decision to cancel the licence based on a committee report. The inquiry committee found fake documents used for illegal kidney transplants and recommended cancelling licences of the petitioner hospital and Cethar Hospital in Tiruchi, along with criminal action against brokers and officials involved. It also suggested reconstituting organ transplantation authorization committees, formulating a Standard Operating Procedure for live donor transplants, interviewing recipients online if needed, printing forms in Tamil and English, and preserving documents for at least 10 years due to medico-legal importance.
