Cheteshwar Pujara announced his retirement from all formats of cricket on August 24, 2025, ending a career that included 103 Test matches and 7,193 runs. Pujara, who last played for India in the 2023 World Test Championship final, decided to retire after considering the timing for about a week. He expressed pride in representing India and gratitude towards teammates and support staff. At 37, Pujara cited the opportunity for younger players as a key reason for his retirement. Earlier in 2025, other Indian cricketers also retired: Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket in May, Piyush Chawla retired from all formats in June, and Varun Aaron retired from all formats in January. Pujara finished as India's eighth-highest Test run-scorer, with 19 centuries and 35 half-centuries at an average of 43.60. He has been active in domestic cricket for Saurashtra and Sussex in recent years. His retirement marks the end of an era for Indian Test cricket and opens space for emerging players in the national team. (Updated 25 Aug 2025, 12:48 IST; source: link)
