Davis Lu, a 55-year-old former software developer at Eaton Corporation, was sentenced to four years in prison for intentionally damaging the company's computer systems. After a 2018 restructuring reduced his responsibilities, Lu planted malicious code including infinite loops that deleted coworker profiles and caused system crashes. Most notably, he created a kill switch named "IsDLEnabledinAD" that locked out thousands of users globally when his Active Directory credentials were disabled following his termination in 2019. The sabotage caused significant disruption and financial losses to Eaton. Lu also attempted to cover up his actions by deleting encrypted data and researching ways to evade detection. The U.S. Department of Justice prosecuted Lu for causing intentional damage to protected computers, and he will serve three years of supervised release after his prison term. A motion for a new trial was denied by the court. Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew Galeotti stated that Lu breached his employer’s trust and that the Criminal Division is committed to prosecuting such attacks on U.S. companies.
