2.6 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Assam's Karbi Anglong District

A 2.6 magnitude earthquake struck central Assam on Monday at 3 pm IST, according to the National Centre for Seismology. The quake's epicenter was located in Karbi Anglong district on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River, about 43 km southeast of Tezpur, at a depth of 5 km. Tremors were also felt in neighboring districts including Nagaon, Hojai, Golaghat, Sonitpur, and Biswanath, causing residents to evacuate homes temporarily. No injuries or property damage have been reported so far. Assam lies in a high seismic zone, making such earthquakes relatively frequent. Meanwhile, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake in eastern Afghanistan on Sunday resulted in over 800 deaths and more than 2,500 injuries. India has begun sending relief materials to the affected areas, with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar assuring further supplies to Afghanistan's counterpart Amir Khan Muttaqi.
