Jamiat Chief Arshad Madani Sparks Row Over Himanta Biswa SarmaSaralnama

On 29 Aug 2025, Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind (A) chief Arshad Madani said he wrote to Sonia Gandhi asking her not to give an election ticket to Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, calling him an RSS supporter. Madani accused Sarma of displacing 50,000 Muslims in Assam through eviction drives. Sarma, who was earlier a Congress leader before joining BJP in 2015, strongly denied the claims and said he does not care about Madani or Jamiat. BJP leaders criticised Congress for appeasement politics and supported Sarma's eviction drive to clear illegal encroachments affecting over 50,000 people. The eviction mainly targets Bengali-speaking Muslims, who say their ancestors settled on the land after river erosion. The Jamiat called for Sarma's removal and criminal action against him, but Sarma responded defiantly, saying Assam’s people support his actions. (Updated 29 Aug 2025, 19:31 IST; source: link)
