The number of animals infested with New World screwworm, a flesh-eating parasite, rose by 53% in Mexico by mid-August 2025. The parasite mainly affects cattle but has also been found in dogs, horses, sheep, and humans in southern states like Campeche and Chiapas. Dozens of people received hospital treatment for the infestation. The first new case in Mexico was reported in November 2024 after the parasite had been declared eradicated in Mexico in 1991. The larvae feed on living flesh by laying eggs in open wounds or mucous membranes, causing serious damage if untreated. An 86-year-old woman died in July 2025 in Campeche due to complications from the infestation. People working with livestock or living in rural areas are most at risk. Health officials advise keeping wounds clean and covered and using insect repellent to prevent infestation. Anyone suspecting infection should seek medical help immediately.
