On 27 Aug 2025, Turkey launched its Steel Dome air defence system in Ankara. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan handed over 47 vehicles worth $460 million to the Turkish Armed Forces. Developed by Turkish firms like Aselsan, the system offers multi-layered protection against drones, missiles, and other aerial threats. It integrates radars, missile batteries, electronic warfare, and command centres into one network. The Steel Dome aims to reduce Turkey's reliance on foreign suppliers and boost defence exports. Erdogan also inaugurated a $1.5 billion defence technology base, expected to open in mid-2026, to support future projects. The system is still under development but marks a major step for Turkey’s defence autonomy and regional security. (Updated 28 Aug 2025, 17:15 IST; source: link)
