Punjab is facing a severe flood crisis as the Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej rivers have overflowed due to heavy rainfall and high dam water levels. The Ravi river breached its embankments in Amritsar and Gurdaspur districts, inundating villages and agricultural land. Key dams including Bhakra, Pong, and Ranjit Sagar are near or above their maximum capacity, forcing controlled water releases that exacerbate flooding downstream. Several villages are submerged, and schools in affected districts have been closed. Rescue operations are underway with the help of the Army and disaster response teams. The Chief Minister, Bhagwant Mann, is actively monitoring the situation. The flood situation remains critical with continued rainfall forecasted, raising concerns for further inundation and disruption in Punjab. (Updated 28 Aug 2025, 14:05 IST; source: link)
