The Dutton family story starts in 1883 with James and Margaret Dutton settling in Montana. They had children Elsa, John, and Spencer. Elsa died young after marrying Sam, a warrior. John Dutton III, their great-grandson, owned the Yellowstone Ranch and had four children: Lee, Jamie, Beth, and Kayce. John III was killed by his son Jamie and Jamie's girlfriend Sarah. Beth married Rip and sought revenge for her father's death. Kayce married Monica, and they have a son named Tate. The family faced many hardships but stayed connected to their ranch and land.
