France's President Emmanuel Macron, Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk visited Moldova on 27 Aug 2025. They met Moldovan President Maia Sandu to mark Moldova's 34th Independence Day. The leaders showed strong support for Moldova's bid to join the European Union. They warned against Russian interference ahead of Moldova's parliamentary elections on 28 Sep 2025. Macron said the EU respects sovereignty and opposes Russia's propaganda. Merz highlighted ongoing Russian attacks aimed at destabilising Moldova. Sandu called the visit a sign of European solidarity and said there is no alternative to Europe for Moldova. Moldova has accused Russia of hybrid warfare including disinformation and vote-buying. The visit sends a message that Moldova’s future lies with the EU despite pressure from Moscow. Moldova started EU accession talks in June 2024 and faces a tough election that could affect its pro-European path. (Updated 28 Aug 2025, 00:55 IST; source: link)
